“Beyond Water” is a concept exhibit created by art teacher, Ms. Cristina Douglas (Capelo), and art student, Miss Julia Pimentel. Both artists are inspired by their love for the ocean and all the creatures connected to it.
Julia Pimentel is a high school student in her final year at Mount Saint Agnes Academy (MSA). Although she has always been a keen artist, at 16, a portrait of her dog gained her several commissions for similar works. Another painting, “Humpback Blues” created in May 2018, helped Julia to make the decision to select a Special Studies course in art and develop a collection of her artwork with the intent to exhibit.
As a result of Julia’s course, art student and art teacher decided to work together to develop a show of our artwork with the theme “Beyond Water”. The intent is to show how two artists working on the same subject matter can create differently, using a variety of mediums and styles. Julia finds inspiration in the ocean’s ever-changing vistas, from sunrise to sunset and open water to calm inlet. Ms. Douglas finds a connection between the fluidity her painting technique and water; she is drawn to the water and finds inspiration from its reflections and movement.
Cristina Douglas (Capelo) is the art teacher at MSA and has been teaching for over twenty years. She has exhibited in several BSoA members shows over the years as well as a duo show in the Edinburg gallery in 2017. An active artist, she has also had duo shows with her daughter Elena Portius and partaken in the Charmin Prize. Cristina also produces works on commission in this style and as a caricaturist.
Julia is headed to Lesley University in September to study Childhood Education and minoring in Art Therapy. This summer she will be catching up on her art commissions as well as working.
