Our Governing Body
The volunteer Governing Body of BSoA is comprised of 11 dedicated professionals from a cross section of Bermudian culture and professional backgrounds. Each one of them brings a specific specialty thus ensuring a well rounded governance.
Charles Anderson, Co-President
Charles Anderson has served on the Governing Body for 7 years, and has been a members of the Bermuda Society of Arts for 10 years. A self-taught photographer with a degree in fine arts, he operates his own photography studio. He has been taking photographs professionally for nearly 25 years and has worked for a variety of magazines, as well as with private clinets on numerous advertising campaigns. He exhibits his work at the Island’s art galleries on a regular basis and, in 2010, was the receipient of an Honourable Mention for Innovation in the Charman Prize competition.
Duncan has served on the Governing Body since 2007, and as Co-Vice-President since 2008. He is Director of the Bermuda Documentary Film Festival (Bermuda Docs), and operates Access Communications, providing writing, editing and public relations services to Bermuda’s business and legal communities. He was Deputy Director of the Bermuda International Film Festival for eight years, a lawyer at Bermudian firm Appleby for three years, and a journalist for 10 years. He has a B.A. from the University of Toronto, and a law degree from the University of Victoria.
Russell de Moura, Vice President
Russell joined the Governing Body in 2008. He has 20 years’ experience in multi-discipline design services. After obtaining an Honours degree in graphic design from University of the West of England, Russell has worked as a graphic designer and illustrator in all aspects of print and digital media for numerous local agencies and clients in Bermuda. Over the years his keen interest in design has gradually evolved to include the design and building of unique products, furniture, residential architecture and interior design.
Mark Waddington, Treasurer
Mark joined the Governing Body as Treasurer in 2008. He came to Bermuda from Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1994, originally working for Price Waterhouse before working for Attorneys Liability Assurance Society (Bermuda) Ltd and Partner Reinsurance Company Ltd. In 2002, he joined Chartis Bermuda Ltd (formerly American International Company Ltd) as the Director of Investment Accounting and Fund Administration. Mark has a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and obtained Chartered Accountant and Chartered Financial Analyst designations in 1993 and 1999, respectively.
Jennifer Lapsley, Secretary
Jennifer Lapsley joined the Governing Body as Secretary in 2010, following her return to Bermuda in early 2009 after spending four years abroad working, and then travelling. She is a long-time member and volunteer with the BSoA, with her involvement really growing during her brother Peter’s tenure as Gallery Director. Jennifer works in the Excess Casualty division of the Bermuda insurance company Chartis, and when she is not working she is a keen photographer and sometime sculptor. She is a graduate of St Francis Xavier University, majoring in Political Science and English Literature.
Irving has served on the Governing Body since 2003, and has been a member of the Society of Arts for nearly 20 years. A Chartered Accountant, he has run his own consulting and accounting practice since 1985. Prior to that, he worked for accounting firm Ernst & Young, first in Windsor, Ontario, and then in Bermuda, where he was variously Manager of Audit, Liquidation and Accounting. His other charitable activities include working with The Bermuda Sloop Foundation – and The Makeda Trust, an organisation formed to promote theatre arts. He has a bachelor’s degree in political science from Canada’s McMaster University.
Dr Jolene Bean, General Member
Jolene joined the Governing Body in 2009. She was born and raised in Bermuda and as a photographer, she understands the importance of preserving Bermuda’s cultural landscape. She exhibits her work at the Bermuda Society of Arts and at the Bermuda College Art Gallery. Jolene is a history professor at Bermuda College where she has been teaching for the past 20 years. She incorporates history in her daily activities and in addition to shooting photography she enjoys genealogy, family history and more recently, writing and producing family documentaries. Jolene has a Master’s degree in history from Queen’s University in Canada and a Ph D in history from the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom.
Anita joined the Governing Body in 2009. Born and raised in Bermuda, she is the Manager of Frameworks, the framer of choice for many in Bermuda’s artistic community. Anita’s parents beganthe business more than 30 years ago and she has been working in the shop since graduation from high school. She believes that being in the art industry from birth has given her the eye and the love to appreciate how everything around us is art.
Simon joined the Governing Body in 2009. He works as a Senior Architect, and is a Partner, at s.h.y Architecture, having studied and earned his professional qualifications at Birmingham Polytechnic and the University of Edinburgh. As an artist, Simon has participated in a number of solo and group shows at both the Society of Arts and at other galleries on the Island including the Bermuda National Gallery, Masterworks, and the Arts Center at Dockyard. He works in various media, including digital photography, sculpture, and lighting design
