Out and About (the small architectural oils) This series of oil paintings represents an ongoing exploration of the horizontal and the vertical, of exterior and interior space and, of the land and the sky. My paintings are a means to this exploration of shapes as definers of space. My work is further influenced by the natural and built environment in Mexico. The yellow, ochre and rich autumnal colors in the landscape as well as the ancient, degenerating buildings that reveal their many layers of multi-colored plaster are developed in abstraction. Each day I enjoy the extraordinary quality of light and the rich and intense colour.
Up Close and Personal (small collage work)Yes…it IS a small world after all. I have made a series of collage pieces that are small in size, but large in visual impact. These pieces feature an assortment of images and text from vintage magazinesand photographs, books, old maps, hand made papers, and image transfers printed from a variety of sources. I create them through the use of layering random materials which appeal to me at any point in time. They are finished with a satin varnish. This work is inspired by the complexities and humour of life. For me, life is about connecting, balance and the element of surprise.
Between the Walls (mixed media using documents found at old Hacienda) These are a series of paintings that have been created using original papers and books that I have been given over the years. Most of them are related to legal matters and some of the letters were uncovered, concealed in a wall, during renovations of an old hacienda in Mexico. I have always enjoyed the dynamic combination of old and contemporary and, for me, this work holds a certain historical quality that I find charming, particularly in this age of technology. It stirs my imagination and takes me on flights of fancy.
