Exploring Drawing by Various Artists

Exploring Drawing by Various Artists

Onions Gallery – January 8 – 27, 2010

‘Art should be something that liberates your soul, provokes the imagination and encourages people to go further.’

~ Keith Haring-Artist

The work in this show is the result of the first session in the new course designed to assist students who plan to enter Art College in 2010/2011. The primary objective is to broaden the students’ skills and complement the instruction offered in school. The emphasis has been on figure drawing, working directly from the model.  In addition, the students learn to use a variety of drawing tools and by doing so are encouraged to venture well beyond their typical artistic comfort zone. The student begins a new stage of creative growth by exploring these tools and the different ‘marks’ each make.

Drawing is considered to be the most intimate of the arts and the exploration of line or drawing is both exciting and daunting. However we view this exploration, it is a journey we begin as children with our uncontrolled scribbles, the start of the five recognized stages of our artistic development. These are Scribble, Preschematic, Schematic, Drawing Realism and the Pseudorealistic Stage.

At some point on this creative journey there are guides and mentors who aid, encourage and instruct. These are roles which I have chosen to embrace. I enjoy the opportunity to share my knowledge with the students, to aid and encourage them in their search for creative fulfillment and further education.
